Some years ago, I toured Frida’s Blue House. One of the rooms had a display of her clothes, back braces, corsets — both plaster and steel, painted and decorated — and other personal items. In one corner was a a hospital gown, it’s front covered in paint daubs and splashes — probably from cleaning her brushes as she painted lying on her back. I think about that hospital gown a lot. And the painted, plaster corsets. That was the motivation for using paint mixed with plaster to create this piece, and was the first time I tried such a thing at this scale. Check out the process behind this painting in the How It’s Made section.
